The Basics – What is a Web Application?

Do you remember when you first started browsing the internet in the late 90s? Websites back then were primarily static. You could think of them as online billboards or brochures – they presented you with information, but there was little you could do with that information on the website itself.
Fast forward to today, and we have what’s known as web applications. But what exactly is a web application?

Simply put, a web application is like an interactive, more innovative, more capable version of those old websites. It’s a software program that uses web technologies and web browsers to perform tasks over the Internet.

Let’s consider a real-life example. Remember how we used to visit the bank for almost every banking need? Whether transferring money, checking account balance, or applying for a loan, it required a trip to the bank. Today, we do most of these things without stepping foot in a bank, thanks to online banking, a prime example of a web application.

Web applications don’t stop at banking. They’re everywhere. Consider what happens when you book a hotel room. You go to the hotel’s website, select your room type, input your stay dates, and the website responds by showing you available rooms and rates. After you select and enter payment details, it processes your payment, confirms your reservation, and sends you a confirmation email. All this interactive processing is the work of a web application.

In essence, a web application takes your inputs, processes them, and responds – all in real time and without the need to refresh your page. It’s a giant leap from the static websites we started with, and they’re reshaping the way we live and work.

Understanding web applications is the first step towards harnessing their potential for your business. In the upcoming posts, we’ll delve deeper into why they matter for your business and how they can help you grow. Stay tuned!
